Your Most Important Leadership Skill

Everywhere you turn, there are still conversations about AI. How to use it, where it’s going, and what it’s going to replace. And while I’m the first to say that there’s value in exploring AI tools, the bigger question isn’t how we use them, it’s how we lead while doing it.

The truth is, it’s not the pace of innovation that overwhelms most teams. It’s the lack of clarity and connection during the process. When leaders don’t take time to communicate the why behind a change or how it impacts people’s roles, it creates confusion and disengagement. And this causes even the best tools to fall short.

AI lacks emotion and the ability to read people. It can’t build trust. It won’t notice when someone’s checked out. It can’t guide a difficult conversation or coach someone through tough feedback. And it certainly can’t make a team member feel seen and valued.

That’s your job.

The real challenge with change, with innovation, isn’t the technology—it’s the people.

Technology will keep evolving, and I’m here for it. But your leadership needs to evolve, too. That means honing the skills only humans bring to the table: adaptability, emotional intelligence, clear communication, and a deep understanding of your people.

When you focus there, the tools become just that, tools. They might help your team move faster. But it’s your leadership that will move them forward.

About Amy Lafko

As a Physical Therapist, Amy spent years in school learning best practices for patient care and how to put the patient first. Like so many technically skilled clinicians, she advanced to a leadership role. Spending 20+ years in operational leadership, she had an epiphany: Putting the customer first isn’t the path to success or fulfillment. Rather, the most successful organizations and practices put their people first – and exceptional customer care, profitability, and effectiveness naturally followed.
